"Let's get Coffee Or Something"

Shot Process

For this shot, I wanted to capture a slice of life from a root emotion that a lot of people could relate to, that root emotion being doubt. I settled on this emotion being the center of how this project would be structured and went from there, coming up with other traits like, "he overthinks things", "he contradicts himself", and "he backtracks". I knew the mood and structure of how the scene was going to work, so I decided to record my own dialogue and came up with the line "Hey, so I was just wondering if you wanted to get some coffee... or something...".  I drew my thumbnails afterward, a lot more than previously, in order to truly understand what key poses my character needed to hit in the scene. From there, I moved onto blocking in Maya, understanding my keys, putting in my breakdowns, and cleaning it all up in spline.

As a side note, the character's face was really fun to play with. I got to work with the more specific controls in his eyes and tried to plus my work graphically so that each pose looks as appealing as possible.

Scene Structure

1) "So I was thinking this" Have good energy

2) He catches himself and re-analyzes "Uh, wait, what? Am I saying the right thing?" Small pause

3) The correction and going through with what he wants to say

4) Making a small contradiction to what he just said as a knee jerk reflex "Or something...."

Story

Dave is a kid who tries his best to put himself out there despite his fairly poor social skills. He wants to be more social and break out of his shell, but he constantly contradicts himself and puts himself down whenever he does so. He knows that the only way to get over this is to just take action and talk more with other people, even if it is weird for him at first. So after class one day, he decides to ask his friend Jane if she wanted to hang out outside of class at some point to get some coffee. Despite all the doubt going on in his mind, this is the point where he just decides to go for it, even if it's awkward.
